History Of Al Shaqab
His Highness The Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani established Al Shaqab in 1992 to build on Qatar’s Arabian horse heritage and to help preserve and perpetuate the Arabian horse breed.
In honor of his ancestor, Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani, The Father Emir located the Arabian breeding farm at the landmark Al Shaqab battle site where more than a century ago the Bedouins had fought a pivotal battle that led to Qatar's independence.
Al Shaqab has since developed into a multi-dimensional equestrian center. It not only breeds Arabian horses but also educates young children in the art and values of horsemanship and equestrianism, and also trains riders and horses for long-distance endurance races.
Its existence rests on three underlying pillars of education, excellence, and heritage, enabling it to be a leading equine center of excellence that provides an engaging experience for the community - a place for everyone to celebrate Qatar’s unique heritage and history.
In 2004, Al Shaqab became a member of Qatar Foundation, providing opportunities for the Qatari community to participate in a wide variety of cultural and equestrian activities.
In 2006, Al Shaqab began a visionary expansion with the development of a world-class equestrian center.
Today, spread out over 980,000 square meters, Al Shaqab stands out for its unique architectural design laid out in a horseshoe shape and is renowned the world over as Qatar’s iconic equestrian destination.
About Qatar Foundation
Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development is a private, non-profit organisation that is supporting Qatar on its journey from carbon economy to knowledge economy by unlocking human potential, providing home-grown solutions for the benefit of not only Qatar, but the world. Founded in 1995 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Amir of Qatar, Qatar Foundation is chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.

Situated in a stunning 980,000 square-metre horseshoe shaped design, Al Shaqab has many distinctive architectural elements.
